Mikinduri Children of Hope (MCOH) was co-founded in 2003 by Ted and Rita Grant and Makena Ambassa. MCOH’s mission is to relieve the effects of poverty in Kenya by working with local leaders, churches, government agencies, self-help groups and international partners. We believe in providing a “hand up, not a hand out” by providing appropriate resources, knowledge and training so the people can lift themselves out of poverty.
MCOH is run by a team of dedicated volunteers in Canada and Kenya. We also partner with two community based organizations (CBOs) in Kenya. Without these partners (who initiate, supervise and monitor the approved projects) our work could not happen. It is with these CBOs that our annual mission team engage with the communities that we jointly serve.
Since 2003 our work has been centered around the Mikinduri area in Eastern Kenya. In 2017 MCOH expanded to Western Kenya, focusing on Mageta Island and the Bondo areas.
The people we serve in Kenya have little access to clean water, food, education, healthcare and safety. Employment opportunities are limited and the future can be bleak. Despite this, the Kenyan people we serve are hard working, kind and eager to improve their lives. MCOH is dedicated to improving the basic necessities of life for our Kenyan neighbors.
