We have arrived! After 24 hours on a plane, through Montreal, Zurich, and finally Nairobi, the first thing Brady thought when he arrived at the Nairobi airport was, ‘There’s no snow!’ It was a lovely hot 28 degrees. While waiting in line for immigration, we were screened for ebola by walking under on a camera. Angie thought the amount of security at the airport was surprising. She mentioned how they require your fingerprints (from every finger!) and a photograph.
We collected our 16 massive bags, and believe it or not, all 16 bags plus both walkers arrived! (That is a rare occurrence).
Once we got outside, we heard the noise of the people, saw the bumper to bumper traffic, and cringed when every guard nonchalantly walked by with a machine gun. We headed to our hotel, and stopped for water and grilled chicken fast food for a late night dinner. One constant thought I have while in Kenya: have I drank enough bottled water?? Between the temperature and dryness, as well as plane travel, you have such a surprising awareness of how much water you’ve had throughout the day.
The hotel was plush, with free wifi (woah!!), hot showers, and comfortable mattresses. Peter learned (the hard way) that the nets above the beds were meant to keep away mosquitos…they weren’t princess beds. “I woke up at 2am with a mosquito buzzing around my head and went ….ooohhh….. that’s what they’re for”.
