A visit with Dr. Sarah Obama. Yes… you read that name correctly! Dr. Sarah Obama is the step-grandmother of President Barrack Obama. We were fortunate to visit with her today and see where the former US President stayed when he visited Kenya as a child. Visitations are by appointment only but Benard decided we should at least head to her homestead. Upon our arrival, her security guard told her about the work we were doing and that we were visiting from Canada. She was very gracious and welcomed us into her home.
We sat with her for at least 40 minutes while she told us about her passion of helping widows and orphans. She was quick to say that her work has nothing to do with what her grandson does! It has always been her passion and is extremely rewarding work for her.
With her keen insight into current politics, it is hard to believe she is 95! She is sharp, open, honest, opinionated, and gracious. She even wore a beaded Kenyan bracelet that contained flags of various countries, with the Canadian flag prominently displayed.
She was eyeing each one of us and had comments about us all. George is the “quiet gentleman”, Kathy the “quiet beauty”, Brittany is the “young long-necked very important one”, Cheri “grows like a banana”, Tracy “needs to stay and Kenya and get married”, and Ben is a coward and is not following his ancestral roots and becoming a polygamist.
We were all very thrilled to have met her. She showed us her many honourary degrees and awards. She has also travelled extensively and spoke very highly of Canada. She even had a commemorative plate of former Mississauga, Ontario Mayor, Hazel McCallion.
Truly a memorable day.
Love to all our family and friends in Canada,
Kathy, Brittany, George, Cheri, and Tracy
