A Song in our Hearts
As we prepare to leave, I reflect on how much I have been touched by the people of Kenya, and how meaningful this trip as been for Mikinduri Children of Hope supporters. When one considers the expenses, time away from family, and vacation time used to go to Kenya one might wonder – is it worth it? I offer a resounding “yes”.
We must have a presence here, not only to support Beyond Limitations Community Based Organization, director Elizabeth, and international representative Ben, but to strive to better understand the culture, the hopes, challenges, strengths and the fears of the people we serve. By going to Mageta Island we not only saw but also experienced life where safe water is scarce, there is a lack of toilets, hand washing facilities, and travel on the dusty roads where we walked or drove on picky – pickies (motorbikes) as there are no cars on the island. But we also saw strong communities where parents help with food for the school feeding programs, and children shout out and join us on our walks. Neighbours greet us as they walk to the lake to go fishing, bathe, wash clothes, and gather the water they take to their homes. One is filled with a sense of community.
I share with you the words from a Kenyan song:
Go to the people,
Live with the people,
Learn from the people,
Work with them,
And when the work is done
WE have done it.
See you soon!
Love to family, and friends,
Kathy
